After venues started locking off anything connected with Hip Hop the Jams moved to new spots in other parts of London. Travelling West from deep South London could be dangerous for some and people would roll deep to ensure safety. London was yet to be divided by postcode and was simply North, South, East and West. This may have been the jam where shots rang out when Westwood played the legendary and super rare ‘Cool V’s Tribute to Scratching part 2’. As the crowd dusted out I stood for as long as I could before running for the exit just so I could hear a few more bars. In those days only a few Dj’s had the exclusives so you took every opportunity you could to hear them. Nice and Smooth killed it and brought some dope dancers with them too. My never take your coat off in the club crew, my High top fade and my Twins Barbers Crew, my Four Star General and my out of town Suburban B Boy Crew who took life in their own hands and risked disapproval from mummy to be part of the culture crew, my save for two years just to get one turntable crew, my Lay Low Ladbrook Grove Crew, My 28’s and 36 Bus Boys Crew, my Wormwood Scrubs, Live To London, Jubilee Gardens UK Fresh and Covent Garden Crew,My Groove Records, Black Market and Liberty Grooves crew, Live to Break, Artful Dodger, Chrome Angels Crew and everyone else who was really there as opposed to researching on the Internet and pretending to be an expert. this is for all my UK Hip Hop peeps who built the scene that other people feed off. You will never be erased from history because you are the history. Post those flyers,share the memories and more importantly keep telling the stories. Talking Loud and Saying Nothing. Dingwalls in Camden late 80’s sunday afternoon jazz session with @brownswood @Gillespeterson and Patrick Forge. My early musical education came from sitting in the Dj box and listening to these two spin records I never knew existed. I actually didn’t have enough money to get into the club and travel home so I’d usually sip water and walk home after the session high on the musical memories all the way back to South London. Still got that Stussy Shirt in my archive. The day that Gilles played a record I’d actually made will stay in the mind forever. Mile 24 Copenhagen marathon with my main man @simonbfreeman in the background. Simon is one of the fastest distance runners I know and shut down the london marathon last month with a 2.37 and placed 105 out of 36,000 runners but took time to pace me through yesterday to a new PB and finally a sub 4 marathon. So many times I wanted to give up the ghost but he kept on pushing and encouraging me to the finish line. Real friends see things in you that you can not see and encourage you to explore your potential. Fake friends sit on your shoulders and hold you down in case you wake up and reach for the sun. I used to travel around the world with a record box, arrive in the dead of the night and leave for the next city in the early morning never meeting anyone other than promoters and record dealers. It can be a lonely life chasing your fellow Dj friends around the world. Rocking a party for thousands of people and then sitting in your hotel room alone watching crap TV until the cab arrives to take you to the airport. Now I travel the world with my running shoes and a smile. Over the last year I’ve been blessed to meet some incredible people from all walks of life through the Bridge The Gap movement. Props to @mikesaes for sparking the convo that birthed the movement, @nbrorunning for being the perfect hosts and all international crews who reached for the Copenhagen marathon. When people look at Run Dem and the vast amount of people in the crew they often forget how we started. People always ask me how to start a crew and I say it’s easy. Pick time, pick place and invite a handful of people and away you go. If you are passionate about the idea then lead from the front and let your energy be infectious. This is the original crew on our very first run taken about 5 yrs ago in Victoria Park. From left to right myself, label manager @markle875, actor and director Leo,creative consultant Andrew Missingham , Dj and producer @zzzarate and photographer @andrewcotterill. Like the best parties it was important for me to begin the idea with a diverse group of people. Andrew was the only runner in the group. In those days we used to meet in Leo’s kitchen. We’d run 2 miles slowly and then go for food and it became our Friday night ritual before going to Dj and party down. You can’t build movements without strong foundations and I’ll always be indebted to these five gentlemen for trusting me enough to follow on this adventure. Things you believe in should be nurtured and it’s always best to take the long road for long term success. Rather than procrastination it’s best to get out there and try it , it might not work straight away and it may require tweaking but if it remains as another idea in a notebook you’ll never ever know if it works.As the lyric goes ‘Don’t talk about it, be about it ’ Running changed my life and run dem has definitely had an impact on the lives of many people across the globe. Things I Now Know Part 3….There is no finish line. Keep foot on accelerator and keep on pushing the boundaries. Learn from those who know more than you and listen to those who know less. Never rest on past achievements and keep on seeking the new. Be kind, be honest and be fair, radiate the light you wish to receive, find rainbows in the darkness and sunshine in the night. Read, digest and document. Respect those who went before you and keep the door open for those who follow behind. Respect the artefacts in the archive of life. Make everyday a celebration of how far you have come and remember to tell yourself how great you are…. I could go on but hopefully you get the idea, if we start treating and thinking about ourselves in a more positive light then collectively as a community we will be better. Homeward bound from Nike WHQ. It’s been inspiring, challenging and thought provoking week. Returning with new ideas and energy and ready to hit my city running. Looking forward to being reunited with my family and crew but will definitely miss this place. Sometimes you have to step into the unknown to remind yourself how far you’ve come and often it takes the appreciation of strangers to make you realise that the path you have chosen is the right one. London can be a lonely and insulated place at times but this week has shown me that there is a whole world of possibilities still waiting to be discovered if you keep on looking under the stones.
